GirlTalk By Our Girl Roxy
Do you like this story?
My first conscious thought that pops into my head is “.. it smells like Hennessey & cigarettes. Yuck.” As I begin to wake up, everything from the night before starts coming to me… lots of cognac, lots of laughing & smoking,. Just another usual out of control night- it was fun as hell. Then I realize, shit! Today’s Sunday- dopeee! Im gonna go see GirlTalk in Brooklyn with Julia!
As the day progresses, the alcohol saturating my brain slowly takes effect and sooner than later, I’m full fledged drunk. Ive been up for two hours.
Four more hours and a gazillion dodge-ball games later- (only in WillyB would they have a dodge-ball court) Greg Gillis aka GirlTalk assumes his position. Trying to explain GirlTalk to unfamiliar ears proves pretty difficult. Right now, he is regarded as one of the best mash-up DJs out there. Matching hip-hop beats to vocals with no common ground, he makes Juicy (Biggie Smalls) almost haunting as he dubs it over Elton Johns, ‘Tiny Dance’. Working off his laptop, he mixes 4-5 tracks without ever missing a beat- it’s pretty bad ass. It has become a ritual to allow his cult of hipsters on stage with him while he brings the funk, which they go crazy for.
In the middle of the set, with a stage full of security behind him, he gets on the mic and asks the crowd to ‘chill out for a minute’. After a few moments of silence he grabs the mic and shouts “Yo we broke the stage!” A huge roar erupts and the crowd goes crazy. Right then the skies open up, and the music comes back blasting louder than before. People were going nuts, dancing in the rain and screaming with such a sense of glee it was almost un-imaginable. I feel like a mystified hipster writing this, (no I wasn’t on ecstacy) but it was really that good. I looked at my girl and said the only word I could use to describe this show was magical. It had a very Coachella-esque togetherness feeling. It was dope.
I’m no hippy hipster but I’ve really got to give it to this guy. He knows how to create one hell of a vibe. Great show!
