Urban Meyer is not going to Notre Dame….Ever. Print It
Do you like this story?
Yesterday, Urban was asked at a charity golf outing if the story was true that he was headed to South Bend after this season. He turned to sports writer Pat Dooley and said:"I'm not going to Notre Dame. Ever. I'm going to be the coach at Florida for a
long time, as long as they want me."
He then turned to the other writers at the event and said for all to hear “Print It!”
Last week, a story was dredged up about Urban leaving the Florida Gators after this season to become the head coach at his “Dream Job” at South Bend Indiana, otherwise known as the great University of Notre Dame.
To provide some back story for some that might be unfamiliar with it, prior to becoming a head coach, Urban spent five years as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. He then went on to become head coach at Bowling Green and Utah, before landing in Gainesville. He always was pretty open about the fact that he has always wanted to become the head ball coach for the Irish, and since his major success with the Gators, that statement has been dragged behind him, pulling at him for the past couple of years.
The story resurfaced, at it has seemed to every couple of months, that after this season Urban was going to pack up and leave Florida. This rumor relies on the premise that Notre Dame will have a real bad season this year and that their current head coach Charlie Weiss will be asked to leave the program. This is the first falsity of this entire fiasco. Number one, Notre Dame is poised to have a very good year, with a pretty easy schedule and a bevy pf returning starters, Weiss isn’t going anywhere.
Number Two: Notre Dame was Urban’s dream job before he landed at Florida. The two programs can’t be compared at all when looking at current status. It is incredibly easier to recruit at UF, the academic standards are much lower, and the entire infrastructure of the football practice facilities at Gainesville are state of the art.
The real story should be that Urban Meyer is now has his “Dream Job” and that, like everything else in life, aspirations and wishes change over time.
