My new hero...Eric Byrnes
Do you like this story?
Athletes are not heroes. I repeat...Athletes are NOT heroes...unless we're talking about Eric Byrnes. Not Babe Ruth...not Mickey Mantle...not Jordan, Kobe, Lebron or OJ. None except Eric...and I'll tell you why. But first a little back-story.
It's sure as shit not his numbers...with a .258 average, 109 career home runs and 396 RBI's, his numbers rival that of Melky Cabrera. Nothing special. He did have one exceptional year...that being in 2007. This year he was one of the few players ever in the MLB history to hit 20 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season. In doing this, the Diamondbacks gave him a 3 year, $30 million extension. Not bad. Sadly, he got injured and pretty much tanked from there. In 2009 he was traded to Seattle, and soon after retired. So why's he this Nudgers hero? Keep reading.
2010 is the last year of his contract. He will make $11 million dollars this year NOT to play baseball. Awesome. So what does a former MLB'er do with his time...join a Men's slow pitch softball league. So if you're a fan, head to Menlo Park, California, where you'll find Eric playing for The Dutch Goose, a slow pitch team sponsored by a local pub...I shit you not. $11 Million for softball. My hero.
Here's his first homerun.
You're Welcome and I'm out...
